Mount Holly DUI Lawyer: Evesham Township Initiative Reduces Drunk Driving

Beginning Friday, September 4, 2015, Evesham Township residents will be able to get a free ride home from local bars and establishments with the objective to decrease drunk driving. The new 30 day pilot program, “Evesham Saves Lives”, was presented by Police Chief Christopher Chew and Mayor Brown. Chief Chew and Mayor Brown announced that the township will be offering a free shuttle bus to any address in town for anyone who has been drinking alcohol and needs to get home. The township developed this program through a collective effort between the police, Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), the Evesham Celebrations Foundation, Sober Sam and the Marlton Business Association.

One of the motives behind the initiative “Evesham Saves Lives” was the tragic death of a 19 year old Evesham resident, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2009. The teen’s death prompted the police organization to become more proactive with the DUI enforcement program in order to protect innocent lives.

The free service will have five stops beginning at 9:00 pm and ending at 2:00 am. The shuttle service will roughly serve nine bars and restaurants and will utilize Evesham-run shuttles, as well as the Camden County-based “Sober Sam” designated driver service. Evesham residents who feel that they are too impaired to drive can use the new free Evesham Police Department mobile app to view shuttle schedules, or contact Sober Sam drivers. Individuals who are not residents of Evesham Township and need a ride home from Marlton’s bars or restaurants can use the Sober Sam program at a discounted rate.

The initiative of this program was to make a positive impact on the community while also providing safe options to arrive home after frequenting Evesham Township bars and restaurants. After the first weekend in operation, the program helped 65 residents arrive at their homes safely.
