Mount Holly DUI Lawyer: Labor Day Initiative Against Drunk Driving

As the unofficial end of summer and Labor Day 2015 approaches, residents throughout New Jersey prepare for backyard barbecues, an extended weekend at the shore and spending time with family and friends. Unfortunately, Labor Day weekend is also notorious for an increase in fatal drunk driving car accidents. From August 19 to September 7, 2015, local police and state law enforcement will target impaired drivers nationwide through the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative. The focus of the crackdown couples public awareness with aggressive and visible law enforcement with the goal of reducing preventable highway deaths caused by drunk drivers.

By working alongside of police officers and highway safety professionals, people across the nation can help decrease the amount of individuals who may be tempted to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs and as a result save valuable lives. While drunk driving deaths are one of the most common criminal offenses, they are the most preventable of criminal charges. By making a responsible choice to not drink and drive, valuable lives can be spared.

No Tolerance, No Excuses

States across the country have implemented a no tolerance, no excuses policy regarding drivers who get behind the wheel while intoxicated. DUI checkpoints, local DUI patrols, DUI warrant and probation sweeps and DUI Courts targeting suspended drivers will all contribute to keeping drunk drivers off the roads this upcoming Labor Day weekend.

Over 10,000 people were killed in drunk-driving crashes in the United States in 2012. More than 38% of all traffic deaths over Labor Day weekend that year were the result of drunk drivers. One in four deaths caused by intoxicated drivers were attributed to drivers who were found to have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .15% or higher which is almost double the legal limit.

On non-holidays, someone is killed in a drunk driving crash every 51 minutes, but drunk driving deaths increase to one every 34 minutes over Labor Day weekend. Almost half of drunk driving deaths over the 2012 Labor Day weekend occurred at night and involved a BAC of .08 or higher. Moreover, approximately half of young drivers between the ages of 18 and 34 who suffered fatal car crashes over the holiday weekend in 2012 recorded an .08 percent BAC or higher.

Preventing DUI Arrests and Tragedies in New Jersey

Planning ahead and designating a sober driver when attending an event where alcohol will be served is a conscious choice that will decrease the chance of Labor Day festivities turning into a tragedy. Calling a cab or taking public transportation instead of getting behind the wheel intoxicated will prevent injuring someone else or yourself as well as avoiding the serious consequences that result from a DUI offense in New Jersey.

Facing New Jersey DUI charges often results in loss of license, possible prison time and significant monetary fines. Individuals convicted of a DUI charge in New Jersey can expect the costs to total up to $10,000.
