Statutory Deadlines In New Jersey For Filing A Criminal Charge

There are “statutes of limitations,” or time limits, that must pass before prosecutors may file criminal charges against someone. Every state sets its own legal dates, and in New Jersey, the deadlines are determined by the kind of crime that was allegedly committed against the person.

The following are New Jersey’s statutes of limitations for filing criminal charges:

  • Manslaughter and murder offenses have no statute of limitations. Any period of time may be used to submit charges.
  • The statute of limitations for felonies, such as official misconduct, bribery crimes, and associated offenses, is seven years from the date the crime was committed.
  • Other felonies have a five-year statute of limitations.
  • The statute of limitations for misdemeanors, which include minor infractions and disorderly person charges, is one year.
  • The statute of limitations is suspended if a person is running from the law or is being investigated for the same offense.

Interesting Facts About Delran, New Jersey

Native Americans inhabited this area for a very long time, going back to before the advent of written history. The Lenni-Lenape people, who originally named the river “rapid stream of the Lenape,” were descended from the Algonquian people who inhabited the area. The Lenni-Lenape people became known as the Delaware Indians in the early 1600s, after the river was named after the European explorer who first mapped its course. People living on either side of their “rapid stream” could be roughly classified into one of three distinct groups. Northern Delaware Indians, known as Minsi, Middle Delaware Indians, and Lower Delaware Indians, known as Unami and Unilachtigo, respectively.

The wolf, the tortoise, and the turkey were their respective emblems. The Unami, or so-called Turtle, tribe were the indigenous people of the Rancocas Valley. Whenever a member of the tribe encountered an outsider, he merely had to draw the turtle—the tribe’s emblem or “totem”—in the sand to be recognized. The natives of the middle valley of California are said to have descended from the Unami, who claim to be the first inhabitants of the region. The turtle symbol of this people comes from a fable about a mythical tortoise who, according to the legend, carried the earth on its back.

Lands in southern New Jersey were split into “Tenths” in preparation for the arrival of English settlers in significant numbers during the Quaker migration of 1675-1682. It was the London Ten survey of 1682 that included the area that would become Delran. In that pivotal year, a north-south route connecting the early towns of Burlington and Salem was mapped out in the Province of West New Jersey. The Salem Road extended from the northern border of what is now Delran Township to the southern and eastern borders of what is now Moorestown and Haddonfield. Known as the King’s Highway during the colonial era, this road has maintained its name and status in some places.
