Support Increasing for Legal Marijuana in New Jersey

A recent poll of residents in New Jersey has found an increase in support for the legalization of marijuana in the Garden State. The poll, conducted by Rutgers/Eagleton, found that six in 10 residents of New Jersey support the legalization of marijuana in both the use of the drug and possession of the drug. The poll’s director, Ashley Koning, said that most residents in New Jersey are in support of legalizing the drug and clearing the records of those charged with small amounts of possession. Residents are also showing support for the taxation and regulation of marijuana based on the poll.

Results of the NJ Poll

The results of the poll conducted by Rutgers/Eagleton found that close to 58 percent of respondents strongly or somewhat strongly support the legalization of marijuana in New Jersey. The poll went on to find that some 79 percent of respondents feel that people penalized for marijuana crimes in the past should have their records cleared. Some of the other results from the poll include the following:

• 64 percent of poll respondents believe that legalizing marijuana, selling, and taxing it would help improve the state’s economy
• 64 percent of poll respondents claim that they would not be bothered if a business related to marijuana opened in their town
• 45 percent of poll respondents claim that they think marijuana is a less dangerous item when compared to alcohol
• 12 percent of poll respondents said that they think marijuana is a more dangerous item when compared to alcohol

The poll found a mixed response when respondents were asked about marijuana leading to increased usage of opioids.
