Common Summer Crimes

Summer is a time for summer vacations and weekends spent around the pool. But did you know that the summer months also lead to an increase in crimes? Some crimes are more likely to occur in the summer. Knowing what the most common summer crimes are and what you can do to prevent them can help you and your family stay safe this summer.

These are some of the most common summer crimes:

Burglary

Burglary is when a person illegally enters a building with the intention of committing a crime, usually theft. Burglary is most often charged as a third-degree offense in New Jersey. This can lead to legal fines of up to $15,000 and prison time between 3-5 years. These charges are upgraded if the burglary includes the use of a weapon.

Larceny

Larceny is a crime that involves theft. It most commonly involves a person illegally taking and leaving with someone’s property. New Jersey considers grand larceny to be the theft of anything of higher value, like computers or jewelry. Larceny charges range depending on the value of goods stolen.

Domestic Violence

Domestic violence is physical or sexual violence against a partner. It may also include emotional abuse in some cases. The details of the domestic violence affect the charges that someone can expect in New Jersey. However, it can lead to a restraining order and jail time. The offender may also be sued in court under tort law.

Aggravated Assault

Aggravated assault includes a person attempting to or causing bodily injury to another person with an indifference to the value of human life. Aggravated assault in New Jersey may be charged as either a second, third, or fourth-degree charge. Simple assault is also a potential charge, which involves attempts or threats of injury.

Why Crimes Rates Increase in the Summer Months

There are a few reasons why crime rates increase during the summer months. For one, people tend to have more time available. Children and teens may be out of school, looking for something to do.

Another common reason for the increase in summer crimes is that people tend to spend more time away from home. People may spend all day at the pool or beach. They may also go on numerous extended vacations, leaving their homes open.
