Heightened Enforcement of Drunk Driving Laws During Holiday Season

Heightened Enforcement of Drunk Driving Laws During the Holiday Season in NJ

The holiday season is upon us and in full swing.  People are gathering together with family and friends to celebrate the festivities and spend some quality time with each other.  Alcohol is often a part of these celebrations.  With this comes an increase in the number of individuals who will drink and drive.  This in turn correlates to an increase in the number of accidents related to impaired driving.  Research has shown that the number of motor vehicle accidents related to a DUI (driving under the influence) or DWI (driving while intoxicated) typically spike during this time of year.

Law enforcement officials are fully aware of the statistics and anticipate this surge.  They are on high alert watching and attempting to make as many DUI and DWI arrests as they can to prevent accidents.  The number of officers is usually increased during the holiday season with sobriety checkpoints, roadblocks and speed traps set up.

Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign Underway

A statewide campaign in New Jersey that is geared towards cracking down on drunk drivers called Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over is underway. The campaign is spearheaded by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) along with several other safety advocate organizations. The main objective of the campaign is to prevent individuals from driving after they have been drinking.  The campaign is intended to convince drivers that the risk of getting caught is too high. The benefit of drinking does not outweigh the risk.  The greater sense of police visibility over the next several weeks is intended to deter drivers from operating their vehicles when in an impaired state.  The New Jersey holiday safety campaign starts today and runs through January 2, 2014.

Facing a DUI or DWI Arrest in New Jersey?

While it is encouraged for everyone to avoid or limit their drinking and driving this holiday season and take the proper precautions to ensure safe traveling such as designating a sober driver, we understand that many people may find themselves in the situation where they are charged with a drunk driving offense.  The consequences of a DUI or DWI arrest can be quite severe including:

  • Monetary fines
  • Community service
  • Loss of driving privilege
  • License suspension
  • Mandated educational driving programs
  • Insurance surcharge
  • Jail time

In addition to the legal ramifications of a DUI or DWI driving offense, individuals may face lost time at work or even the potential of losing their job. Being arrested for an impaired driving offense can be an overwhelmingly stressful and disruptive time.

If you find yourself in a DUI or DWI situation, one of the most important things you can do is to hire a qualified and knowledgeable DUI lawyer.  This is essential if you want to ensure the best possible outcome.  Well-respected New Jersey criminal defense lawyer, Michele Finizio, Esq., is here to help.  With her extensive experience, she can aggressively defend your rights to avoid or minimize the negative consequences.
