New Jersey Traffic Lawyer Reports: Increased Risk of DUI Charges on Fourth of July

New Jersey Traffic Lawyer Reports on Increased Risk of DUI Charges on Fourth of July

The Fourth of July is an ideal summer holiday full of trips to the shore, barbecues and many other celebrations.  According to data provided by www.esurance.com, more than 34 million Americans will be traveling on U.S. roadways this July 4th weekend.  Independence Day is also a time for an increased risk of drunk driving or DUI arrests as more travelers take to U.S. roadways.

Americans buy more beer on July 4th than any other holiday.  This equates to more drunk drivers on the road causing a potential for car accidents.  According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), Fourth of July is the deadliest day of the year for fatal car accidents.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) reports that 40% of all fatal car accidents on the Fourth of July from 2007 to 2011 were alcohol-related and the result of a drunk driver.

The Effects of a DUI Conviction in New Jersey

Individuals who operate a vehicle while under the influence risk their life as well as the lives of innocent motorists, passengers and pedestrians.  A DUI conviction carries with it serious penalties and can have long-lasting effects for the offender.  Some of these include:

  • An increased risk of being involved in a fatal car accident.
  • Monetary fines, court costs and DMV fees, totaling an estimated $5,000 to $25,000 for a DUI guilty verdict.
  • Jail time.
  • Triple the cost of car insurance premium for up to five years.
  • Designated as “high-risk,” allowing insurance companies to charge a premium rate and negates the driver’s eligibility for any car insurance discounts.

The New Jersey traffic lawyers at the Law Offices of Michele Finizio want to remind drivers to avoid drunk driving this holiday weekend.  Always select a designated driver so that your holiday plans can be enjoyed safely.
