New First-Time DUI Laws for 2020
Starting in December, New Jersey will be cracking down on drunk driving even more so than before. Police will be actively looking for anyone who appears to be driving under the influence. What’s with the sudden push to make more DUI arrests in the state?
Lawmakers and advocacy groups believe they’ve found a solution that could help drastically reduce drunk driving. Their idea is to penalize impaired drivers by making them install a new device called an ignition interlock system into their car. The technology, which works like a breathalyzer, won’t allow the driver to start their car if the system detects alcohol on their breath. If the driver blows a BAC under the legal limit, then the car will start.
This new solution prevents drunk drivers who have been arrested for the first time from losing their license. They’ll still face other penalties like jail time and fines, though. Individuals who already have a DUI on their record will not be eligible for this new program. It’s only meant for first-time offenders.
