Haddonfield DUI Lawyer Discusses the Increase in DUIs on Thanksgiving Weekend

Haddonfield DUI Lawyer Discusses Reported Increase in DUIs During Thanksgiving Weekend

During the Thanksgiving weekend, a higher volume of drivers flood the nation’s roadways to see family and friends for holiday celebrations, consequently leading to a higher number of alcohol impaired drivers. According to the National Safety Council, Thanksgiving is one of the most dangerous United States holiday for travel, which leads to the highest number of car accident fatalities. The probability of getting into a car accident rises significantly during this time period. Not only are there far more drivers on the road, but there are more drunk drivers on the road than on non-holidays.

With co-workers getting together for a last minute happy hour and many college students home for Thanksgiving, the day before Thanksgiving provides the perfect time to socialize before the holiday weekend begins. Alcohol is usually an integral part of celebrations. The day before Thanksgiving is commonly referred to as “Blackout Wednesday” because of the rising number of binge drinking by young adults and college students.

Statistics compiled by Mothers Against Drunk Driving showed a slightly higher number of drunk driving fatalities on the night before Thanksgiving than on New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July. Furthermore, police presence is typically heightened around holiday weekends, which can lead to an increase number of DUI arrests and charges for individuals driving under the influence.

Moreover, as the Thanksgiving holiday weekend approaches, weather conditions can change which affect the conditions of the road. This can also increase the risk of drunk driving car accidents. Snowy and icy roads can be challenging even for experienced drivers; however, driving under the influence increases risk for impairment and can slower reaction times.

It is important to remember that a DUI conviction is a serious motor vehicle offense and can carry heavy penalties including fines, fees, license suspension and possible installation of an ignition interlock device. It is imperative to use caution while traveling this Thanksgiving weekend and to use appropriate judgement to avoid driving after drinking. The best way to avoid a DUI conviction is to not drink and drive, choosing not to drink at all or designating a sober driver ahead of time.
