While some jobs will require an applicant to disclose a DUI, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prevents potential employers from denying a job to individuals with conviction records unless they have a compelling business reason.
Although a DUI charge is not a criminal offense, it can incur criminal penalties. Sentences will be imposed somewhat subjectively by a municipal court judge who will determine the severity of the offense and the resulting penalties. The law in New Jersey requires a minimum sentence of 180 days in jail for third time offenders.
