Labor Day Weekend has been associated with an increased amount of drunk driving fatalities over the last several years.  Drunk driving caused over 140 deaths during Labor Day Weekend in 2012, amounting to 38% of all traffic related deaths for that time period.  Approximately 25% of these fatalities involved drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .15 or higher, almost twice the legal BAC limit in New Jersey.

New Jersey police departments have initiated a new public safety campaign to increase public education on the dangers of drunk driving. The high visibility state and local police enforcement “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign will run from August 15 through September 1 in New Jersey.  The campaign, which is funded with grants from the New Jersey Division of Highway Safety, will allow extra patrols to target drunk drivers during this busy holiday weekend.

The New Jersey officials are encouraging all residents to plan for sober driving over Labor Day Weekend by designating drivers or providing overnight accommodations for guests who will be drinking.  A conviction for DUI charge in New Jersey carries serious consequences.  In addition to hefty monetary penalties, many convicted drunk drivers will lose their driving privileges and have to serve jail time.
