Legally Buying Marijuana at the Jersey Shore Will Depend on What Town You’re In

If you live in the Asbury Park, New Jersey, area, you might be aware of the new cannabis shop on Route 66. The grand opening brought locals and tourists alike. Asbury Park officials have agreed to the sale of recreational marijuana as a method of revenue. However, even with new laws, this shop is only for medical marijuana.

Many Cities Opt-Out

This doesn’t mean that you will find marijuana shops all over the Jersey shore just yet. In fact, many cities are finding ways to opt-out of the new laws. New Jersey laws give cities until the end of August to create laws that prevent marijuana dispensaries from opening up. If they don’t create these laws within the timeline, then they will have to wait another five years to do so.

Even cities that voted in support of recreational marijuana may have the dispensaries blocked from opening. Most New Jersey locals are aware of the alcohol-free town of Cape May. They will also prohibit any recreational marijuana shops from opening up.

Some city officials worry that marijuana dispensaries will increase crime rates and prevent families from visiting the area. Much of New Jersey’s coast success relies on the tourist dollars from families. So far, New Jersey cities including Ocean City, Stone Harbor, Sea Isle City, and Wildwood have all put in place laws that prevent people from buying marijuana.

While Asbury Park is still for medical marijuana users, there are plans for local businesses nearby to open up as recreational shops. They are one of the few New Jersey cities that believe that the increase in income from recreational marijuana, and the increase of tourists, is beneficial to the city and its residents.

Charged With a Drug Crime in New Jersey?

The drug laws, especially ones that involve marijuana, are constantly changing in the state. This can make it difficult to know when you are allowed to use, or buy, marijuana. It could also lead to you getting in trouble in one city, and not in another, for marijuana use. If you find yourself dealing with marijuana charges in New Jersey, it is more important than ever to reach out to a criminal defense lawyer.

A lawyer is up to date on the latest state laws and can help you defend your case. Your lawyer may also be able to negotiate a lesser sentence based on the changing laws in the state. Certain marijuana charges in New Jersey can lead to the same legal consequences as a disorderly persons offense, which means up to 18 months of jail time and fines of up to $25000. With the right lawyer, you may be able to avoid some of these charges.
